Mike Stewart (KnowPain, UK) is a physiotherapist from UK who became relatively well-known after his podcast interview on “The Physio Matters” podcast. He is a spinal clinical specialist in the UK who is highly experienced working with people suffering from persistent pain.
Here, he was interviewed in Saudi Arabia during the time he was invited to conduct a workshop.
Mike is a huge advocate for motivational interviewing, using Socratic teaching methods instead of didactic ways to teach people about how they should work with persistent pain. Socratic teaching, or Socratic method, named after the classical Greek philosopher Socrates, is a form of inquiry and discussion between individuals, based on asking and answering questions to stimulate critical thinking and to illuminate ideas.
Mike is very good with using analogy to describe why pain persists. In my opinion, this interview is rich with information about communication that all medical professionals can learn from.
In chronic or persistent pain, reconceptualize pain as being a threat instead of being a sign of injury/damage is the first step in dealing with chronic pain.
